When your vehicle’s check engine light comes on, you want to make sure that everything is okay with how your vehicle functions, and you want to figure it out pretty quickly.  You wouldn’t want to ignore a sign that could lead to an issue being worsened.  That’s where the Service Departments at Lewis Automotive, with locations in Fayetteville and Springdale, can help, with our factory-trained technicians and diagnostic equipment.  We’ve been giving fantastic vehicle maintenance on our customer's vehicles for decades, making sure that our Northwest Arkansas customers are taken care of.

Here’s a few tips we put together on what that Check Engine Light might mean, and why it’s important to address that problem as quickly as possible.

Check the Gas Cap

This is a very common issue that can cause the Check Engine Light to come on.  This happens when the gas cap has come undone or is not closed properly.  This will trigger the alert in your vehicle, and you may need to check the gas cap into place before continuing to drive.  This can be the first place you can check yourself, to see if it’s the correct issue or not.

Engine Combustion

If the engine is having issues with functioning properly, it will also trigger the Check Engine Light.  Some of those issues may be faulty connections that are creating problems with how the engine performs when the vehicle is running.  Our Lewis Automotive technicians have the diagnostic tools to determine whether this is something we can address and repair.

Catalytic Converter

Something you’ll absolutely want to address with a trained technician is whether the Check Engine Light is being triggered by your catalytic converter.  This part of your vehicle separates the unsafe and toxic gasses from the safe ones, and can harm the vehicle if unaddressed.  It can also be a health risk, and should be repaired by a trained technician.

Spark Plugs

Another option we can check may be the spark plugs.  If one of them goes out, this sets off the Check Engine Light, as a head’s up that more of them are also likely to go out soon in the future.

Air/Fuel Mix

There’s a specific balance of air and fuel that needs to be maintained for a vehicle to run safely.  The Check Engine Light will come on to let you know that this may be an issue that needs to be addressed, before anything bigger breaks down from the imbalance.
